P/J French Practica

Partial French Practicum Placements

Primary/junior teacher candidates who have very strong French-language skills can request to do a partial core-French practicum for Practicum 2 (7 weeks). French P/J placements can only be partial, as primary/junior teacher candidates must complete a practicum in each of their teaching divisions and gain experience teaching the full range of the curriculum, including language arts, math, social studies, and the arts. A balance will be struck between an English-language P/J classroom and a core-French classroom; typically students will spend mornings in one classroom and afternoons in the other for the entire seven week practicum.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible, teacher candidates must pass the French Proficiency Test offered by the Office of Continuing and Professional Learning and complete the FSL AQ Part 1 no later than the fall term of their professional year at OISE.

Requesting a Partial French Practicum

Decisions regarding French classroom experience will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the CTEP Office. If you are interested, please email Greg Boudreau, School-University Partnership Coordinator in CTEP, at greg.boudreau@utoronto.ca no later than September 30, 2017 (and the earlier the better). If you have questions, you can direct them to the email above or call 416-518-7069.

Unfortunately, there are no guarantees when it comes to partial core-French practicum placements. While CTEP staff will do their best to secure such a placement, it is not always possible to find a placement that meets all of the desired criteria for the candidate, as well as core French. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that interested candidates have a phone conversation or meeting with Greg Boudreau in order to ensure clear communication.

French Proficiency Testing and FSL AQ Part 1

French Proficiency Test and the FSL Part 1 AQ are administrated by OISE’s Continuing and Professional Learning (CPL); dates and details can be found on their website. The test and AQ are offered four times each year, and they are scheduled so that those who are successful on the test can enrol in the next AQ session, though a successful test result remains valid for three years.

CTEP P/J candidates are entitled to one attempt at the test free of charge. In order to enrol without having to pay, email oise.cpl@utoronto.ca to let them know that you are a CTEP primary/junior division teacher candidate who wants to take the French proficiency test; include your name and student number in your email.
