Thorndike Career Achievement Award is given to living recipients, for career achievements (not for one or a few excellent pieces of research), for research in educational psychology (rather than psychology in general or education in general), and for original, scientific, empirically-based research, including meta-analysis research (rather than for textbooks or interpretive reviews). Additionally, the award should be for research in the best tradition of educational psychology. Developmental Neuroscience & Education Award!
Professor Kang Lee in the Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology is a recipient of a University of Toronto Distinguished Professor award in Developmental Neuroscience and Education.
The prestigious University of Toronto Distinguished Professor Awards are limited to no more than 3% of the tenured faculty, and are designed to recognize faculty members with highly distinguished accomplishments, who display exceptional promise, and maintain an extraordinary level of activity in research and scholarly work in their respective fields. Kang is the first recipient of this award at OISE.
Over the last 15 years, Kang’s research has been focused on two areas of development: moral cognition and action with a specific focus on lying from cross-cultural perspectives, and social perception with a specific focus on face processing in children and adults coming from different social-cultural backgrounds. Kang’s research has been funded by SSHRC NSERC, NIH, and the National Science Foundation of China, and he is the recipient of numerous awards. A former director of the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study, a most prolific writer, his research and scholarly work has had direct impact on education policy and practice.
Professor Lee will continue to build capacity in developmental neuroscience and education at OISE and the University of Toronto. Please join us in celebrating and congratulating Kang on this well-deserved and most prestigious award.

23 OISE faculty members earned a total of $2.6 million in newly awarded Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Standard Research Grants. This represents the best SSHRC Standard Research Grant results for OISE since 2006 and almost doubles the total dollar amount from last year. "This is a wonderful accomplishment and a well-deserved achievement for each," said Dean Julia O'Sullivan.
The newly awarded funding grants provide an average of $125,000 to each faculty member and support three-year programs of research that foster and develop vigorous collaborative and multidisciplinary activities. OISE researchers will carry out research in the areas of: curriculum and academic achievement
* teacher education
* higher education
* social justice
* youth
These grants emphasize the development of new theoretical and methodological approaches to education research and provide wonderful training opportunities for OISE’s graduate students and future researchers.
This year’s results mark a success rate of 60%: up 14% from last year. This will drive OISE faculty to compete and succeed in future SSHRC, and other prestigious competitions. The program concludes this year as SSHRC gears up to shape new funding opportunities for the future.
