Program Mission

Welcome to the Master of Arts Program in Child Study and Education at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study. This program combines a Master of Arts degree with elementary teacher certification. Housed in historic McCarthy House, our program admits only 47 students each year who want to pursue a career in teaching elementary school children with graduate training that may lead to a doctoral degree.

Our program is truly unique in the world. In addition to combining teacher education and graduate studies, our program offers intensive practicum placements in our on-site Laboratory School as well as in public and private school settings. Students may choose to concentrate in the areas of special education and/or early childhood. French and Catholic placement settings are also possible. Our program offers approximately 600 hours of practical experience in classrooms.

Our distinguished faculty make significant contributions to research in the areas of child development and education and encourage students to participate in their active research projects. When you are admitted to our program, you will become a graduate student in the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Develoment  at OISE/UT, where you can work with and learn from faculty members in a variety of fields such as education, developmental psychology and school and clinical child psychology.

Each year outstanding graduates leave the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study prepared to make a difference in the lives of children.

Please visit the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study website for more M.A. program details: http://www.oise.utoronto.ca/ics.

Admission

The Master of Arts in Child Study and Education program is offered down the street fro OISE at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study, a centre of professional teacher training and research as well as a Laboratory School with children from Nursery to Grade 6. The philosophy of the program is based on the belief that successful teaching requires an understanding of how children’s capacities, concerns, and behaviour change with age; how individual differences reflect developmental changes; and how social and physical environments influence children’s development. Teaching practices and learning opportunities at Jackman ICS are largely inquiry-based and influenced by emerging research.

Admission into the two-year M.A. requires undergraduate studies equivalent to an appropriate University of Toronto bachelor’s degree (typically a four year degree) with standing equivalent to a University of Toronto mid-B or better in the final year. Applicants are also required to have experience working with groups of elementary school-aged children, preferably in positions of responsibility. Normally an interview is required prior to admission.
