Overview of M.Ed Degree (Community and Educational Settings)
 

The primary purpose of this degree program is to provide individuals with the opportunity to learn and develop counselling skills appropriate for a variety of work settings. Students will be encouraged to develop their courses and practicum learning experiences to suit their own goals. Examples of the type of goals for which suitable programs of study could be developed include adult counselling, college and university counselling centres, career counselling, geriatrics counselling, multicultural counselling, and community mental health and family life centres.

The program of study provides the student with the basic preparation for certification as a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). Further information regarding detailed requirements for CCC is available from CCPA's website.

Students must plan their program of study according to the current Guidelines for the Counselling Psychology Program. Faculty advisors will assist in this process. This may be done in consultation with a faculty advisor.

Minimum Admission Requirements

• An appropriate bachelor’s degree of any background or discipline, with a grade equivalent to a University of Toronto B+ or better in the final year, from a recognized university.
• At least one year of relevant experience.

Registration Status

This program is available for full-time and part-time on-campus study.

Program Delivery

Required courses are offered in both day and night schedules to accommodate full-time and part-time students. In-class instruction is the method of delivery for all courses.

Program Length

The average length students require to finish this program full-time is two years. Normally, three half-courses are taken in each of the Fall and Winter Sessions and a maximum of two half-courses in each of the Summer Sessions.

Part-time students average two to three years to complete this degree. Part-time students may only take one half-course in each of the Fall and Winter Sessions, and one half-course in each of the Summer Sessions. 

The degree requirements must be completed within 6 years for full-time and part-time students.

Program Fee

The minimum program fee is 1.5 times the one-year full-time Academic Fee, listed in the links below, and is assessed for the academic year in which the program is begun. Incidental fees are not included.

Course Requirements

Practicum

Students must complete 250 hours in a practicum setting.. All practicum and internship arrangements must be made in consultation with the Internship Coordinator.  Students are encouraged to consult the Coordinator, Dr. J. Silver, as soon as possible after admission into their program of study.  Upon acceptance, students may begin their programs in July or September.

Comprehensive Exam

Examination times are posted in the department and on the departmental websites for the fall, spring, and summer terms (usually shortly after the last day of classes for each term).  It is the students' responsibility to schedule their own examination by registering with Todd Will (todd.will@utoronto.ca). The registration form and questions can be picked up in the main office.
