Program: PhD in Development Psychology and Education Awards: Masters' Level
Current Research: I am a PhD student in Developmental Psychology and Education. My area of research interest is the†investigation of the language and†literacy development of bilingual and English language learners. I am interested in understanding language, cognitive and environmental factors that play a role in the development of English literacy skills in this population. For my dissertation I conducted a study examining the role of several language and meta-linguistic skills on vocabulary and reading performance in bilingual children from two native language backgrounds (Chinese and Spanish) and compared them with†a group of English monolinguals. I am a student member of the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network and the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading. I am also part of professional and community organizations; currently I serve as board member for the Hispanic-Canadian Teachers Association and as a volunteer for the community radio station Voces Latinas 1610AM. Involvement with these organizations gives me the opportunity to translate and transfer knowledge to a broader community. |
