Principals' Qualification Program - Admission Requirements

All qualifications and degrees documented by PQP applicants must be validated by a CURRENT Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification which we have access to via the OCT Public Registry.

Please note that if your Certificate of Qualification does not list all of your current professional qualifications, you are advised to have it brought up to date as soon as possible. The Ontario College of Teachers makes no provision on the Certificate of Qualification for listing extra credit courses or a partially completed Master's degree program. You should inform the College of partial credits and forward to them the necessary transcripts to support your application. If you wish to have such credits considered by OISE , it will be necessary to supplement your application with copies of official transcripts (photocopies are not acceptable) and a letter from the institution indicating that the credits completed are equvialent to half a Master's. You are advised to apply early, and to forward ALL appropriate documentation so that your application may be assessed accurately, well ahead of the start of classes.

Amendments to S.44(1) of Reg.184/97 Teachers Qualifications, were filed as Reg. 135/08 in May 2008 stipulating the minimum duration of a Master’s degree as 30 credits;

“a degree for which the applicant was required to complete at least 30 graduate post-secondary credits or their equivalent, or a doctorate, where the master’s degree or doctorate is granted by an institution identified in clause (a), (b), (c) or (d) definition of “acceptable post-secondary degree” in subsection 1 (2). ”

The credits or their equivalent must have been completed by the applicant in addition to any credits that he or she was required to complete to be granted a Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification. As such, an official transcript of the graduate degree must be submitted as part of the admission review process.

Prerequisites for PQP Part 1:
1. Must be registered with the Ontario College of Teachers with basic qualifications in three divisions (including the intermediate basic division). Evidence of a post secondary degree or equivalent acceptable to OCT. It is no longer necessary to send in a copy of your Certificate of Qualification. We have access to this information via the OCT Public Registry.

2. Evidence of one of the following:

  • Successful completion of an acceptable Master's (of which must be at least 30 graduate post-secondary university credits) or Doctorate degree that is outside of the existing teacher education program from which the candidate was certified (as defined by the Ontario College of teachers). Official university transcripts are required and must be sent in directly from the issuing institution.
  • Two (2) Three Session Specialist or Honour Specialist Additional Qualifications.
  • One (1) Three Session Specialist or Honour Specialist Additional Qualification and an official transcript showing successful completion of at least half the number of courses required to qualify for an acceptable Master's degree from an accredited university. Since graduate programs vary in course requirements and duration, a letter from the University confirming that you have successfully completed at least half the number of courses to qualify for an acceptable Master's degree is also required. Submission of official university transcripts are required and must be sent in directly from the issuing institution.

 3. Evidence of at least five (5) years of successful teaching experience as certified by an appropriate Supervisory Officer on the 'Certificate of Teaching Experience Form' (Found in the 'Forms & Handbooks' section of this site.

Prerequisites for PQP Part 2:
1. Must be registered with the Ontario College of Teachers or hold an interim Certificate of Qualification showing the entry of Part 1 of the PQP which would include an approved practicum proposal.

It is no longer necessary to send in a copy of your Certificate of Qualification. We have access to this information via the OCT Public Registry.
