Technological Education - Admission Requirements


Technological Education Grades 9 and 10 Level (formerly Basic)

Prerequisites:
 

1. Applicants who DO have  both the  9/10 and 11/12 in one Technological area listed on their Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification qualify to take any other 9/10 Technological course (note-to take the 11/12 course there are prerequistes -see below under 11/12 level).

 

2. Applicants who DO NOT have Technological Education listed on their Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of Qualification ie: 9/10, 11/12 Technological courses in the same area , must meet the following admission requirements:

  • 5 years of full time wage earning related work experience* 

 See below for the  combination of post secondary education and related work experience that would be considered equivalent. (work related experience must be wage earning, full time, in the related field, documented on company letter head outlining the duties performed)

OR

  • 3 years full-time work experience* in an OISE listed trade/profession AFTER successful completion of a related 2-year diploma program.

Note: This skilled wage earning experience must include a period of at least sixteen months of continuous employment.

OR

  • 2 years of  wage earning work experience* in an OISE listed trade/profession AFTER successful completion of a related 3 or 4-year diploma/degree program

Note: This skilled wage-earning experience must include a period of at least four months of continuous employment. 

 

Technological Education Grades 11 and 12 Level (formerly Advanced)

Prerequisites:

1. Teachers who were accepted to the 9/10 course based on having the Technological Studies 9/10, 11/12 in one subject area listed on their Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification (see above)and are now applying for the 11/12 course must meet the following prerequsites:

 

  • 5 years of related full time wage earning work experience*

 See below for the  combination of post secondary education and related work experience that would be considered equivalent. (work related experience must be wage earning, full time, in the related field, documented on company letter head outlining the duties performed)

OR

  • 3 years full-time work experience* in an OISE listen trade/profession AFTER successful completion of a related 2-year diploma program.

Note: This skilled wage earning experience must include a period of at least sixteen months of continuous employment.

OR

  • 2 years of  wage earning work experience* in an OISE listed trade/profession AFTER successful completion of a related 3 or 4-year diploma/degree program

Note: This skilled wage-earning experience must include a period of at least four months of continuous employment.  

 

2. Teachers who DO NOT have the Technological Studies 9/10 and 11/12 in one subject area listed on the Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification and therefore were required to meet the 9/10 prequisites for the same course are eligible to take the 11/12 level course with no further prerequisites after successfully completing the 9/10 level in the same area.

 

*Each of the trades or professions listed below is coded to identify the type of formal education that is required:

(C) - a Certificate of Qualification issued by the Ontario government is required (C of Q must indicate a Red Seal in trades that qualify in Ontario under the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program)

(D) - a 2 or 3-year diploma or a degree from either a College of Applied Arts and Technology, or from a University is required

Applicants to a Technology AQ course must have formal technical education, proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in one or more of the following GENERAL areas (inquiries about experience in a specific field are assessed on a case-by-case basis by the assessment office):

Technological Education Honour Specialist

Prerequisites:


1. Your current Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification must show:

  • Grade 9/10 and 11/12 qualifications in one area plus

Two additional 9/10 Technology Qualifications  OR

One additional 9/10 Technolgy Qualification and one of the following course: 

Coop part 1 , Guidance Part 1  ,Design and Technology Part 1 or Industrial Arts, Science and Technology 7/8,  Computer Studies - Computer Technology Part 1 , ESL Part 1, Special Education Part 1, Integration of Infomation and Computer Technology in Instruction Part 1

2. One year post secondary that required grade 12 admission or 600-700 hours of accumualted apprenticeship related college blocks  or one year in an approved Hairstylist school prior to apprenticeship (official transcripts must be provided.)

3. Evidence of at least two (2) years of successful teaching experience, including one (1) year of experience in Technological Education. This experience must be certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer on the OISE Certification of Teaching Experience Form (found in the "Forms & Handbooks" section of this website)

Note: George Brown College offers two distance education CD-ROM programs that meet this requirement and have the approval of the Ontario College of Teachers. The programs are: Electronics (T901) and Electro-mechanical Technician (T902).
