Admission Policies

Additional Qualification (AQ) courses are governed by the Ontario College of Teachers Act, Ontario Regulation 184/97 - and as such admission requirements for AQ courses at OISE cannot be altered or waived.

To ensure successful application, registration and course completion, applicants are strongly advised to read the admission requirements and procedures.

Candidates are responsible for the following:
1. Knowing the rules, regulations, admission requirements and deadlines established by OISE and for complying with them.

2. Ensuring that they have the required prerequisite(s) for the course(s) before applying and forwarding the required documentation to OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning. Candidates who attend or complete a course for which they do not have the required prerequisite(s) and for which they have not been accepted by OISE Continuing & Professional Learning do so at their own risk.

3. Ensuring that they are enrolled in appropriate course(s) required to satisfy conditions, if any, set by the Ontario College of Teachers and stated on their Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification.

4. Checking the Additional Qualifications Online Application System (AQ OAS) at https://aqoas.oise.utoronto.ca for information on the status of their application and for keeping their current contact information up-to-date.

Note: Only applicants who apply by mail or in person will be sent a letter from OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning with information on how to log on to the AQ OAS to check their status.

5. Paying the required course tuition fees and any outstanding obligations, (e.g., fees, library materials, and/or service charges) to any faculty or section of the University including OISE/UT. Candidates will not be recommended to the College of Teachers until the obligation is cleared.

6. Candidates requiring special needs must contact ceaccommodation@utoronto.ca immediately after submitting their AQ application. Read more about Student Services and students with special learning needs.

Required Documentation

Certificate of Qualification
Must be registered with the Ontario College of Teachers or hold an interim Certificate of Qualification. It is no longer necessary to send in a copy of your Certificate of Qualification. We have access to this information via the OCT Public Registry.

Certification of Teaching Experience
Proof of teaching experience subsquent to your Ontario College of Teachers Certification, certified by the appropriate Supervisory Officer, for courses which require such experience as a prerequisite (see the 'Forms & Handbooks' section of this site for the Certification of Teaching Experience Form ).

Official Transcripts
For all courses which require specific university undergraduate courses, official transcripts of your academic record from each university attended must be included with the application. For Honour Specialist courses, each transcript must be received in a sealed envelope, signed/stamped by the issuing institution. Some institutions will not provide you with transcripts in sealed envelopes. In this case, official transcripts should be sent directly from the issuing institution to the OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning, Room 5-103. Transcripts received in unsealed envelopes are not considered official, nor are faxed copies of transcripts.

Please note that OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning does not have access to transcripts from OISE or other faculties at the University of Toronto.

Important Information for Applicants Submitting Academic Documents from Other Countries:
Not all foreign degrees can be accepted by OISE. You can have your documents evaluated by the Comparative Education Service, University of Toronto. If you are unable to submit official transcripts or original documents relating to your university degree please note the following:

  1. Photocopies of original documents are not acceptable unless accompanied by the original for our verification. If you cannot come in person to our office to present your original documents, then a notarized copy of the original, sent by mail, is acceptable.

  2. If your university does not issue transcripts, the original degree diploma, supporting documents and official translations, where applicable, must be presented with photocopies which we will retain after authentication by OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning staff.

The University of Toronto's Comparative Education Service evaluates foreign university degrees. There is a charge for this service. Photocopies of these evaluations are welcome but are not a substitute for acceptable academic documents as described above. For more information on this service, please contact:

Official English language translations must accompany all documentation not written in English. An official translation is one received in the OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning in a sealed, signed/stamped envelope directly from an accredited Translation Service. Official translations in English facilitate the assessment of admission documents and avoid unnecessary and unacceptable delays in the assessment process. At the same time, the candidates also have the opportunity to verify the accuracy of translations (with their own copy) to eliminate any discrepancy or disputes about our assessment. Translations will only be accepted from:

  • The consulate, high commission or embassy to Canada of the country which issued the documents;

  • A Canadian embassy, consulate or high commission in the country from which you emigrated;

  • A translator accredited by a professional association of translators in Canada. To obtain the name of an accredited translator, contact the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) at 1-800-234-5030 or 1-613-241-2846 or e-mail info@atio.on.ca

Academic Penalty

Failure in a course results when a candidate:

  • ceases to attend classes without notifying OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning in writing

  • does not complete all course requirements

  • does not write the final examination (if applicable)

  • commits a serious breach of the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters, e.g., plagiarism

Petitions based on medical or compassionate grounds must be submitted to OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning, with supporting documentation, before the course ends.

Plagiarism
The Office of Teaching Advancement of the University of Toronto posts the following definitions of plagiarism on its Web site, http://www.utoronto.ca/academicintegrity/.

What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism, as defined in the [University of Toronto] Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters (Appendix A, Item p). . . is contained in the original (1621) meaning in English: "the wrongful appropriation and purloining, and publication as one’s own, of the ideas, or the expression of the ideas ... of another." This most common, and frequently most elusive of academic infractions is normally associated with student essays. Plagiarism can, however, also threaten the integrity of studio and seminar room, laboratory and lecture hall. Plagiarism is at once a perversion of originality and a denial of the interdependence and mutuality which are the heart of scholarship itself, and hence of the academic experience. Instructors should make clear what constitutes plagiarism within a particular discipline.

The Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters (University of Toronto, Governing Council Secretariat, 1995, B.1. d-f) reads as follows:

It shall be an offence for a student knowingly:

  • to represent as one's own any idea or expression of an idea or work of another in any academic examination or term test or in connection with any other form of academic work, i.e., to commit plagiarism [wherever in the Code an offence is described as depending on “knowing”, the offence shall likewise be deemed to have been committed if the person ought to have known];

  • to submit, without the knowledge and approval of the instructor to whom it is submitted, any academic work for which credit has previously been obtained or is being sought in another course or program of study in the University or elsewhere;

  • to submit any academic work containing a purported statement of fact or reference to a source which has been concocted.

Withdrawal

Candidates may withdraw from a course by notifying OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning promptly by going to the 'Forms & Handbooks' section of this site and downloading the “Withdrawal Form”.  We will accept the completed form, along with receipt, be e-mail or fax.

Withdrawals are effective on the date the request to withdraw is submitted online or received by OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning. Candidates who withdraw from a course are refunded the portion of their tuition fee less the $100.00 non-refundable application processing fee as dictated by the Office of Student Accounts, and as stated in the fees and refund schedule.

Credit/debit card direct reimbursements are not made.  Tuition fee refunds are issued by cheque only. Please allow at least 4-6 weeks for a refund to be processed.

Never having attended, ceasing to attend, or advising an instructor that you will no longer attend classes does not constitute official withdrawal and will result in academic and financial penalty.

Failure in a course will result when a candidate ceases to attend classes without notifying The OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning in writing.

Petitions based on medical or compassionate grounds must be submitted to OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning, with supporting documentation, before the course ends.

Course Cancellations

We may combine and/or cancel a course due to insufficient enrolment. Decisions regarding cancellations will be made following the application deadline. In the event of a course cancellation, information will be posted in our course offerings page.

Candidates who have enrolled in a course which is subsequently cancelled by our office will be notified of the cancellation by e-mail and/or telephone. Please ensure that your e-mail account is active and that you check your e-mail regularly.

Every effort will be made to accommodate applicants in their alternate choice(s) pending availability of spaces in these courses.

Candidates will receive a full refund of tuition fees paid for a course which is cancelled by our office.

Please inform our office immediately of changes to your telephone number and/or e-mail address, by logging into your AQOAS profile and making the necessary changes.

Some e-mail settings automatically route larger-volume mailings to "bulk" or "junk" e-mail folders. Please be sure to check these locations as well. Alternatively, you may be able to reset your e-mail options so that volume mailings are not filtered automatically to "bulk" or "junk" folders.

Equivalent Standing

OISE does not grant equivalent standing. Applicants seeking equivalent standing for any additional teacher's qualification must apply to the Ontario College of Teachers. Written evidence of equivalent standing granted must be submitted when applying for OISE courses.

Updating Qualifications

To update existing teacher qualifications, candidates follow normal application and registration procedures. Upon successful completion of all course requirements they will be recommended by OISE to the Ontario College of Teachers for the qualification. The College will add the update to the Certificate of Qualification showing the current year of the update.

Change of Name

The University of Toronto policy on Name Changes states that changes to an officially recognized name in the student records of the University can only occur at the written request of the name holder, who must present to an authorized University official one of the following supporting documents together with the request for the change:
- a birth certificate
- a baptismal certificate
- a marriage certificate
- a change-of-name certificate issued by the Registrar General of Ontario

Change or correction of name forms can be obtained in the 'Forms & Handbooks' sction of this site, and in person or by mail from OISE | Continuing & Professional Learning. Supporting documentation must accompany a change or correction of name form.

Email Communication

Please note that with the introduction of the Additional Qualifications Online Application System (AQ OAS), OISE will use email as the primary mode of communication and will no longer be sending official letters of acceptance by mail. Applicants are responsible for checking the AQ OAS at https://aqoas.oise.utoronto.ca for information on the status of their application and for keeping their current contact information up-to-date. Please ensure that we have the most current email address at which to contact you. It is also important that you check that email regularly, including junk or bulk mail folders.
