Writing Processes & Strategies
Here is our grade three writing wall, and on this bulletin board we have a spot for every child in our class to display their work from each month.
And what we do at the end of every month is we have a week where we go through the whole writing process with each student. They do pre-writing to the drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing.
Once that's done, they do a good copy, they bring it over, and they post it on the writing wall, and each month is then put on top of the prior month, so at the end of the year we have samples of work, September all the way through June. At the end of the year, we can send it to the parents so they can see the growth
The goal of Writing Wall: Understanding the Process of Writing (Virtual Tour) is to help students in understanding the various interacting stages of the writing process including planning, organizing, editing and revising.
- Ensure that every student in the class has a space to display their writing. This will keep all students engaged in the writing process and motivated to track their progress over time.
- As students complete writing tasks throughout the year discuss the writing process during one-on-one teacher conferences. Refer to student's work and talk about the progress being made in their writing.
- The writing wall is a perfect place to showcase students' writing for family members and friends.
