Stage 2: Consolidation / Fluency
Stage 3: Literacy for Growth
Motivation for Literacy
Okay, the flower power board above me is another opportunity for the students to integrate language, math, and art in one activity.
They started by decorating three different flowers however they liked, they then wrote about those flowers, whether they're congruent or similar. They compared them with each other, what makes shapes congruent, what makes shapes similar, and the differences between the two.
All vocabulary was pre-taught earlier on in the week with word wall activities, and the culminating task is just to write about it and explain about it. And then it's up there for them to reference if there's ever a congruent or similar shape question that comes up.
The goal of Flower Power: Integrating Math, Art and Literacy (Virtual Tour) is to promote the enjoyment of writing by integrating literacy with math and art.
- Integrated instruction is a teaching approach that connects different subjects according to a selected theme or topic.
- Integrating literacy with other curriculum areas encourages self-expression, is motivating and engaging and involves thinking critically.
