The writing center is a place for the students to go to get materials that they would need for writing including small books that might be premade as well as other writing utensils that they can use. Its also a place where they can work if they need a quiet space for writing. There are sometimes books at the writing center that would be used for the students' creative writing; for example, a book that would just have illustrations. The students are able to use those books to write a story.
At the writing center, we also have our writing folders. After the students have had their pieces of writing on their writing wall, as a presentation, they then put them into their writing folders and we have a log that they keep so that they're able to keep track of all their pieces of writing throughout the year.
The goal of Writing Center: Engaging in Writing (Virtual Tour) is to promote writing for an authentic purpose and help students to understand the structural features of various writing styles and forms.
- Allow students to work on a piece of writing of their choice. Providing students with sentence starters, story ideas and writing topics will help them get started.
- At the writing center provide a variety of writing materials including: pens, pencils, small books, lined paper, blank paper, story starters.
- Have students keep their writing in a writing portfolio. At the end of each term invite students to reflect on their writing by selecting their favorite work. Encourage students to share their writing portfolio with their parents each term.
- Students are always eager to share their writing with others. Invite students to share a piece of writing during an "author's chair".
