Stage 2: Consolidation / Fluency
Stage 3: Literacy for Growth
Primary: Motivation for Literacy
Growing Flowers is a way for us to see how many books we've read throughout the year. At the beginning of the year I would model. Each child would receive a centerpiece. Each time I read a book I put the title of that book on a petal and add it to my centerpiece. I chose these two books at the beginning of the year, and now my boys and girls have continued. Each time they read a book, either doing self-selected reading, at home, we do an activity from that book. Once they have done that activity, they receive a petal and they will add it to their center. So at the end of the year, hopefully all flowers will look just like this one, full and because the flower is full we have increased our literacy.
The goal of Growing Flowers: Keeping Track of Books Read (Virtual Tour) is to promote various genres and the enjoyment of reading.
- Having students track the books they have read by displaying the titles and authors' names on growing flowers is an engaging way to learn about different genres.
