Taking Engaging Literacy Activities Home for Practice with Parents (Virtual Tour)
Stage of Literacy Development:
Stage 0: Foundation for Literacy
Stage 1: Beginning Literacy
Stage 2: Consolidation / Fluency
Primary: Classroom Tips Secondary: Motivation for Literacy
This is an example of our Learning Luggage. The Learning Luggage contains books, games, activities, writing activities, so the children can practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at home. Each Learning Luggage contains a set of instructions which outline how to use the activities that are in the bag. And I've included pictures and words because many of our children are English Language Learners. So one of our most popular Learning Luggages is The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and this activity is a story retell, and all the pieces have Velcro on the back so the children can take them off and then put them on and retell the story. This is another activity in The Very Hungry Caterpillar Learning Luggage. So, the children are going to be practicing their high frequency words. So they put the words on the table and then they have to pick up the word and match it to the word on the caterpillar and read it.
The goal of Learning Luggage: Taking Engaging Literacy Activities Home for Practice with Parents (Virtual Tour) is to provide students with an opportunity to extend their understanding of reading and writing with at-home literacy activities.
- Keep a set of instructions in each learning luggage to guide parents when working with their children. Provide an outline of each activity in the learning luggage. Using pictures and visual cues will help families who are English Language Learners.
- Include activities that are based on books read in class.
- Keep parents informed about classroom activities and learning experiences.
