Introducing Math Concepts and Vocabulary with Literature (Virtual Tour)
Stage of Literacy Development:
Stage 1: Beginning Literacy
Vocabulary, Knowledge Building
I think it's really important to integrate literacy into many other centers, and here we're at the math center and we've been studying tangrams. So we've read Grandfather Tang's story to launch this unit. I also like to show the children the specialized terminology they'll be using. So with a set of tangrams these are the words that they need to know. I've another pocket chart poem that is in my math center. Any time I can find a poem that has numbers in it I'll put it in the math station so the children can practice reading. For example in "1, 2 buckle my shoe. 3, 4, shut the door" the children are recognizing the numbers, as well as tracking, doing return sweep, paying attention to punctuation.
The goal of Literacy in the Math Center: Introducing Math Concepts and Vocabulary with Literature (Virtual Tour) is to expose students to new concepts through the integration of literacy in order to foster thinking skills and the development of knowledge.
- Integrate literacy into centers around the classroom with stories, list words and writing activities.
- Integrated instruction promotes motivation for learning.
- Launching a math unit with a picture book is engaging and promotes literacy.
- Provide students with many opportunities to practice the concepts being addressed.
