Teacher Educators - Culinary Experts & Master Chefs
What does this website have to offer you?
View and share gourmet literacy chefs in action!
This website was designed to support teacher educators in their pre-service language and literacy courses with links to readings, video demonstrations and virtual classroom visits. Get inspiring ideas or copies of your favorite recipes in the form of detailed lesson plans.
It is also intended to provide resources that can be used by literacy leaders (coaches, consultants, support staff) in offering workshops in their districts and in leading professional learning communities in schools.
What the Experts have to say...
Teachers need a strong conceptual foundation and a rich body of procedural knowledge in order to accurately and flexibly implement a high-quality language and literacy curriculum or intervention.
~Hindman & Wasik, 2011~
There needs to be a balance between practical and theoretical knowledge in pre-service teacher education programs
~Darling-Hammond, Hammerness, Grossman, Rust, & Shulman, 2005~
New teachers have reported a need for more practical knowledge in pre-service programs
~Beck, Kosnik, & Rowsell, 2007~
Learning to teach literacy is a seeing and doing activity: that's how you learn it, not through reading your textbook...so perhaps more observing is needed, more modeling, instead of a lecturing environment.
~First year teacher interviewed by Beck et al., 2007~

The Overview and Food Groups sections provide an explanation of what is required for growth in literacy across the elementary grades, and the Virtual Tours section provide examples of what effective and engaging literacy education looks like in a variety of elementary classrooms.
Instructional strategies for students who require additional support in literacy are provided in the Adaptations subsections within the each of the Recipes for Literacy and will be provided in a future section for Special Literacy Diets as well.
Links to evidence-informed articles for each literacy food group, plus downloadable videos for inclusion in Power Point presentations.
