From Diverse to Equitable and Inclusive School Leadership: Critical Canadian Insights

Editors: Dr. Zuhra Abawi, Dr. Stephanie Tuters, Dr. Andrew B. Campbell, and Dr. Ardavan Eizadirad

Deadline for Abstract Submission: June 3, 2022

Contact Email: zabawi@niagara.edu

We invite submissions that address and reflect on the following themes:

 • Antiracism and anti-Black racism in the principalship

 • Queering leadership and gendered contexts within the role of the principal

 • Centering Indigenous leadership epistemologies to counter settler colonialism

 • Dis/ability and leadership

• Navigating systemic and institutional barriers-access to leadership positions

• White supremacy and white privilege in the principalship

• Activism and activist paradigms in school leadership

• Critiques of Western/Eurocentric approaches to leadership/leadership narratives

• Intersectionality and the role of the school leader

Through this edited volume we aim to explore how the principalship in Canada can move beyond neoliberal, additive discourses of diversity to dismantling systems of oppression that are rooted in violent settler-colonial educational structures. In this juncture, we rethink school leadership in order to rupture dominant discursive norms and practices of school leaders and school leadership that serve to marginalize certain bodies. This volume will carve out spaces by reframing what school leadership is, who can be a school leader, as well as the possibilities of socially just leadership for anti-racist, anti-oppressive, equitable and inclusive schools beyond policy narratives enveloped by diversity ‘happy talk’ (Ahmed, 2012).

This edited volume is a call for and contributes to real, meaningful change that looks beyond the common “add diversity and mix” reactionary approaches at play in the current systems by showcasing awakenings and re-imaginings of the entire education system in Canada.

CALL FOR CHAPTERS

We are inviting abstracts for our first volume, The Early Years of Leadership: The Journey Beginswhich will be published by Information Age PublishingThis edited volume is designed to meet the training and professional development needs of incumbent and emerging educational leaders, and will include chapters that focus on the challenges novice school administrators encounter in the first five years of their administrative trajectory as they navigate increasingly complex, volatile, uncertain, ambiguous environments. This volume will also address issues which are often overlooked in the process of leadership preparation, such as crafting a leadership philosophy, the process of developing a professional identity, the multiple roles school administrators play, and the political skills required to negotiate with internal and external power brokers and create inclusive and equitable schools.
