Her graduate level courses include Recursive and Aesthetic Identity in Learning and Teaching, Research Colloquium in Curriculum and Instruction, Children’s Literature Across the Curriculum, and Recursive and Aesthetic Identity in Learning and Teaching.
Karyn’s research and teaching focuses on the sociocultural dimensions of literacy and teacher education. At the heart of her work is the belief that looking critically at a variety of personal and ethical issues may support and enhance inclusion, equity and democratic practice. Her recent book, Burning Issues: Foundations of Education (2004), endeavors to address elements of challenging accepted opinion by actively engaging educators and students in essential matters, such as curricular activities that can assist them in challenging educational scripts that make them uncomfortable for newer, more innovative and inclusive practices.
Karyn was nominated to AERA Division J Distinguished publication Award, 2005.
Karyn Cooper currently conducts three funded research projects: A Case Study of Action Research for Higher Order Reasoning in the Literacy Learning of At-risk Students in Urban Schools (SSHRC), Exemplary district case studies of principal rotation and succession policies: An international perspective (Ontario Principal’s Council), and Qualitative Research in Education: Perspectives and Processes in the Postmodern Era (University Research Council, St Francis Xavier University) with Dr. Robert White.
