Mark Evans, Associate Dean, Teacher Education

Mark is Associate Dean, Teacher Education and Sr. Lecturer in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. He has served as Director of the Secondary Teacher Education Program (2001-2005) and Principal of the History and Contemporary Studies Additional Qualifications Program (1994-1998). Mark is affiliated with the Comparative and International Development Education Centre.

Mark has taught a variety of courses (History & Social Science Education; Citizenship, Pedagogy, and School Communities; Issues in International and Global Education; Teacher Education Seminar; Foundations of Curriculum) in the Initial Teacher, Graduate, and Continuing Education Programs. In addition, he introduced and coordinated the Alternate III Program 'School, Community, and Global Connections' (1997-2000). Prior to his arrival at OISE/UT, Mark served as a secondary school teacher, department chair (History and Contemporary Studies) and district-wide consultant (Instruction and Teacher Development) with the Peel District Board of Education.

Mark has been involved in a variety of curriculum reform initiatives, teacher education projects, and research studies with teachers and schools locally and internationally (e.g., Toronto, Ottawa, England, Pakistan, Russia). Recently funded research includes: Educating for global citizenship in Canada (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council); Inquiry into practice: Reaching every student through inclusive curriculum practices (Council of Ontario Directors of Education); OISE/Toronto District School Board inclusive & community engaged education 3-year pilot project (Toronto District School Board); and a review of literature on professional development content & delivery modes for experienced teachers (Ontario Ministry of Education).

Most recently, his work has focused on 'education for global citizenship' and on 'international dimensions of teacher education'. He has written and contributed to numerous articles, books, and learning resources. Mark continues to serve on a variety of advisory and editorial Boards (e.g., Citizenship Teaching and Learning Journal, the Minister's Curriculum Council, TVO) and he is the recipient of the University of Toronto Teaching Award, the Student Teacher Union's OISE/UT Professor of the Year Award, and numerous awards for teaching excellence.
