Research Overview

I am a Professor and Associate Dean, Programs at OISE. My scholarship, teaching, and creative professional activity program focus on mathematics teaching and learning, the professional learning of teachers, technology-supported learning, and academic leadership. This work has been supported by research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), two grants from the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat (Ontario Ministry of Education), a Nelson Publishing research grant, one Learning Consortium grant, two Ministry of Education Transfer grants, many school district research grants, and one Ministry of Education Implementation grant. I have also received internal grants from SSHRC Institutional grants, University of Toronto funding, and other departmental sources.

Academic History

I have served in leadership roles at the University of Toronto as Associate Dean, Programs (2015-present), Chair (2010-2015) and Associate Chair (2005-2007) of the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, program coordinator of the Master of Teaching program (2000-2009), Director of the Centre for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (2009-2010), as well as chair of numerous department and university committees.

I have served as the Chair and member of the Steering Committee for the Psychology of Mathematics Education North American (PME-NA), the chair of the PME-NA annual meeting (2004) in Toronto, and chair of working groups in AERA, Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG), PME-NA, Fields Mathematics Education Forum, and Ontario Association of Mathematics Educators (OAME).




Teaching Overview

Dr. McDougall teaches in both pre-service teacher education and graduate programs. His graduate courses include Mathematics in Elementary Schools and Computers in the Curriculum. In addition, he also teaches in the Master of Teaching program.
