Research Overview

Dr. Leslie Stewart-Rose is a Professor with the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning, and the Director of the Elementary Initial Teacher Education Program at OISE. Her research interests focus on, anti-oppression education in teacher education and school settings; dialogic inquiry; arts education and social change; and music education.

She is a member of the CMERC Alternative Pedagogies research interest group. The purpose of this group is research related to alternatives to the traditional pedagogies of the rehearsal model or the master/student model of music education. Her music teaching focuses on how music education can work as a catalyst to inspire social awareness, critique and action. She is on the editorial team of an upcoming book: Envisioning and Enacting Social Justice in Music Education. Leslie's work at OISE is informed by 15 years of as a arts educator in schools. Leslie sits on the University of Toronto Arts Council.

Professional Activities

Dr. Stewart-Rose has been active in a number of professional roles, including:

• Inclusive Schools: OISE’s Coordinator for Toronto District School Board’s Inclusive Schools 3-year pilot project. Leading team from OISE working with three elementary schools to develop, support, research and document “best practices” in anti-oppression work.
• Ministry of Education Arts Document Review: Providing ongoing general feedback for the music sections on 2 occasions and performed the anti-discriminatory/bias check for all sections. (2007-2009)
• Ministry of Education, Literacy Gains Project, May 2009 consultant.
• Leading curriculum development work with UTS, special emphasis music department. (2006-present).
• Assistant Director, Interprovincial Music Camp/The Jazz Camp/Camp Rock/Musical Theatre, Parry Sound. (1988-2009).
