Research Overview

Dr. Cathy Marks Krpan teaches in the Department for Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning at OISE. Her primary research interests focus on student communication in mathematics and science. Professor Krpan has also completed research on the development of critical thinking through graphic organizers (such as concept maps and mind maps). She is currently investigating effective teaching strategies that assist English Language Learners in mathematics classsrooms. Other topics of interest include the development of student metacognition, effective assessment strategies, critical thinking models and student inquiry mathematics and science.

She is the recipient of the OISE/UT Initial Teacher Education Program Teaching Award (1997, 1999, 2003 and 2004)and has been nominated for the OISE/UT Distinguished Contributions for Teaching Award, 2006. In 2011 and 2012 she was nominated for the OISE Teaching Excellence Award.

She has authored numerous publications including, "The Write Math", "My Math Journal", "Bold Print" books and a set of math readers which received the 2006 American Teachers' Choice Award. Her publication, Math Expressions was released in May 2012.
