Language and Literacies Education program


The Language and Literacies Education program (LLE) investigates questions around the relationships of literacies in language and language in literacies across communities, societies, instructional environments, and informal learning settings. The scope of the program encompasses the following within applied linguistics and literacies studies: (a) the learning, teaching, and use of first and additional (nonnative) languages in diverse settings;  (b) curriculum, instruction, and assessment related to the development of first and additional language and K-12 literacy skills; (c) the development of bilingual, multilingual, and translinguistic abilities; (d) language and literacy education policies and planning; (e) pedagogy oriented towards multiliteracies development, including early literacy and adolescent reading, writing and oral language development, and children’s literature across the curriculum; (f) social justice issues related to plurilingualism and cultural and linguistic diversity; and (g) pedagogical implications of the fact that language and literacy are infused  into all aspects of learning  in contexts characterized by linguistic diversity.

Specific resources related to the program include the OISE library’s Modern Language Collection, la Collection Franco-Ontarienne, the Children’s and Young Adult literature collection, and the Centre for Educational Research on Languages and Literacies. The program offers three degrees: MEd, MA, and PhD.

Admissions Requirements and Information about LLE Degree Programs

PROGRAM information

All applicants should refer to OISE Graduate Admissions for general information on admissions and registration.

All applicants are required to submit a résumé and a statement of purpose describing their reasons for wishing to do the program, previous qualifications and professional experiences, particular research or professional interests, and future career goals.

For all LLE programs, students must take a minimum of four half-courses (or five half-courses for the MEd) within the LLE program; other courses may be taken in other programs in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning; other Departments at OISE; or in the Departments of Linguistics or Anthropology or in language departments at the University of Toronto.

Master of Education

Applicants are accepted under SGS general regulations, which specify an appropriate four-year University of Toronto bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized university, completed with an academic standing equivalent to a University of Toronto mid-B or better in the final year. Ordinarily, applicants should have teacher certification and at least one year of relevant successful professional experience prior to applying. All applicants are required to submit a résumé and a statement of intent describing their reasons for wishing to take the program, previous qualifications and professional experiences, particular research or professional interests, and future career goals.

The M.Ed. consists of 10 half courses. Students must take a minimum of five CTL3000-level half courses within the LLE program.

The M.Ed. program of study may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. All requirements for the degree must be completed within three calendar years from first enrollment for full-time students and withing six years of first enrolment for part-time students. Master of Arts

Applicants are accepted under SGS general regulations. Admission requires an appropriate four-year University of Toronto bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, in a relevant discipline or professional program, completed with standing equivalent to a University of Toronto mid-B or better in the final year. Ordinarily, applicants should have teacher certification and at least one year of relevant successful professional experience prior to applying. Enrollment in the M.A. (rather than the M.Ed. degree program) is advisable for students expecting to pursue a doctorate in the future. All applicants are required to submit a résumé and a statement of intent describing their reasons for wishing to apply to the program, previous qualifications and professional experiences, particular research or professional interests, and future career goals.

The M.A. program of study may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis and consists of eight half-courses and a thesis. Part-time students are expected to be available to take CTL3001 during day-time hours (usually Friday afternoons). Students must take a minimum of four CTL 3000-level half-courses within the program. Courses must include CTL3001H – Research Colloquium in Second Language Education, Master’s Level plus a course in research methods [RM] relevant to the topic of the thesis. Any ofthe following courses can fulfill this requirement: CTL1018H, CTL1041H, CTL1306H, CTL1810H, CTL1842H, CTL3019H, CTL3033H, CTL3800H, CTL3807H, CTL3810H, APD1287H, APD1288H, APD1296H, APD3202H, APD3228H, SJE1905H.

A student wishing to propose an alternative course to fulfill one of the LLE course requirements, will be required to obtain the approval of both the program coordinator and either their faculty advisor or thesis supervisor.

NOTE: Candidates are responsible for meeting deadlines to complete their course requirements, thesis committee formation and ethical review. All requirements for the degree must normally be completed within six calendar years from first enrollment for part-time students and three years from first enrolment for full-time students. Doctor of Philosophy

Individuals pursuing the Ph.D. typically wish to be university professors in this field. The Language and Literacies Education program offers both a full-time and flexible-time Ph.D. option. Applicants must declare the option(s) for which they are interested in applying.

Admission Requirements

=Degree Requirements:

Full time Ph.D. option:

Full-time Ph.D. students must complete their degree requirements within six years. Students in the flexible-time Ph.D. option must complete their degree requirements within eight years. Degree requirements for both programs are the same. The Ph.D. involves six to eight half-courses (depending on previous experience and academic qualifications), comprehensive examinations and a thesis embodying the results of an original investigation, and a final oral examination on the content and implications of the thesis. Students must take a minimum of four CTL 3000-level half-courses within the program. Students are required to take CTL 3001H - Research Colloquium in Language and Literacies Education, Doctoral Level (unless they have previously taken CTL3001 - Research Colloquium in Second Language Education, Master’s Level [RM]), as well a research methods course relevant to the topic of the thesis. Any of the following courses can fulfill this requirement: CTL1018H, CTL1041H, CTL1306H, CTL1810H, CTL1842H, CTL3019H, CTL3033H, CTL3800H, CTL3807H, CTL3810H, APD1287H, APD1288H, APD1296H, APD3202H, APD3228H, SJE1905H.

A student wishing to propose an alternative course to fulfill one of the LLE course requirements, will be required to obtain the approval of the LLE Program coordinator and either their faculty advisor or thesis supervisor.

For the full-time Ph.D., a minimum of two consecutive years of full-time study are required at the beginning of the program, during which time students usually complete course requirements, pass the comprehensive examination, prepare a thesis proposal and form a thesis committee.

Flexible time Ph.D. option:

Students admitted to the flexible time Ph.D. have the same degree requirements as those in the full-time Ph.D. option except for the following: in the flexible-time Ph.D. a minimum residency of four years of full-time registration is required at the beginning of the program, during which time, candidates are responsible for meeting deadlines to complete course requirements, the comprehensive examination, prepare a thesis proposal and form a thesis committee. Candidates may apply for part-time status after this four year residency
