Dear CWSE Community,

It is with great sadness that we write to let you know that after a short battle with cancer, Roxana Ng, head of the CWSE and faculty member in Adult Ed at OISE, passed away January 12, 2013, surrounded by friends and family.

Roxana requested that donations be made to InterPares in lieu of flowers (www.interpares.ca).

The obituary appeared Wednesday, January 16 in both the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star. A further obituary appeared in the Globe and Mail February 13, and the SSSP honoured her here (PDF). Roxana was honoured January 15 in a motion at Toronto City Council. Thank you to Councillors Krystin Wong-Tam and Pam McConnell for this condolence motion. The motion can be read here.

A memorial of Roxana’s life and work will take place on May 28 2013, 5-8pm, at the OISE library, main floor, 252 Bloor St W.  Further details TBA.

We are also requesting photographs, stories, and words of tribute for a website that will be constructed in honour of Roxana and her work.  If you wish to contribute, please email your photos and stories to jamie.ryckman@utoronto.ca or angelasabrina.lytle@utoronto.ca.

This is an ongoing call for papers for the journal Resources for Feminist Reseach (RFR), one of Canada’s oldest feminist academic journals. See the call below, and author guidelines attached.

We are interested in original and engaging research articles that consider from a variety of feminist perspectives, issues of gender and its connections and interactions with class, culture, race, sexuality, nation and disability. Articles on these and other appropriate topics are welcome submissions to our journal.

RFR/DRF accepts manuscript submissions that are original and not previously published in any format. Submissions under review elsewhere are not accepted.

Manuscripts should not exceed 10,000 words and should be submitted as a .doc or, .docx document (do not submit as .pdf).

Donations of socks, bras, and underwear needed for Toronto women

We are gathering new and gently-used socks, underwear, and bras for a drop-in centre that provides support for women dealing with drug addictions and inadequate or no housing, many of whom are involved in the sex industry. These are priority items that are hard to come by and are much needed. We are also taking donations of tampons and pads.

Donations can be dropped off at the CWSE: 252 Bloor St W, second floor, room 2-225 (directly above the St George subway station in OISE) between 12-4pm Monday-Thursday, or you can leave a bag hanging on the door. If you are bringing large quantities and can’t come by during regular hours, please email us to arrange drop-off: cwse@utoronto.ca or info@learnwhr.org.

At this time the CWSE is NOT collecting any other clothing or toiletries besides, bras, underwear, socks, and tampons and pads. If you are interested in donating other items, please get in touch with All Saints’ directly (website below).

The All Saint’s Drop-In Centre is thriving because of the efforts of so many people, and we thank you for your continued support. The All Saint’s Drop-In works from a harm reduction and human rights-based framework, and is trans-inclusive. You can find out more about All Saints’ here.
