Project: Humanity

Relationship: Project: Humanity (PH) has been a Research Collaborator on the following projects:

  • 2008-2013: Urban School Performances: The Interplay, through live and digital drama, of local-global knowledge about student engagement. Funded  by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

  • 2013-2014: The Temporary Neighbourhoods of Homeless Youth in Shelters: Their perspectives on and the implications of social-spatial polarization.

  • Ethnographic play development project: The Teacher.

Purpose/Mission of Organization:

Project: Humanity (PH) is a non-profit organization raising social awareness through the arts. Founded by theatre/dance professionals and incorporated in 2008, the company has used drama and performance to foster greater understanding and empathy between marginalized groups and the community-at-large – locally in Toronto and across Canada. The company is committed to creating original, socially-minded theatre while maintaining a strong and ongoing community outreach practice – with a particular emphasis on young people.

Over the years, PH has partnered with the Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention, Jessie’s (the June Callwood Centre for Young Women) and most frequently with Youth Without Shelter (YWS), where they continue to lead free drama programming for youth shelter residents.

The Middle Place by Andrew Kushnir – a multi-award winning verbatim theatre piece that sprang from the playwright’s engagement with YWS’s shelter community – was the company’s first full production. The play has had over 100 performances, has toured Toronto high schools and numerous shelters, was produced in the 2010/11 season by both Theatre Passe Muraille and Canadian Stage, and then toured nationally. PH is becoming a leading developer of Canadian verbatim theatre with three new verbatim works-in-progress.
