4- Move Data From Your FirstClass Account

Faculty & Staff Email Migration

The information listed here will guide you through various options that will integrate some of your FirstClass data (messages, contacts, etc.) into your new email client (Outlook/Entourage).  You can do as few or as many of the options as you wish.  Please keep in mind that some options will take only a few minutes, while others may take over an hour to complete.

Before beginning, please take the time to "clean up" your FirstClass mailbox
by deleting any extra messages or folders that are no longer required.

All users that have completed the email migration process, should be operating in this fashion:

  • You now have an account on the new UTORexchange system (log in using your UTORid).
  • You are using either Outlook (PC) or Entourage (Mac) as your email client on your computer.
  • You are using Outlook Web Access for internet-based email communication.
  • You receive email addressed to either your @OISE email address, and @utoronto email address.
  • You can still log in to FirstClass to view old email messages, but new email does not go to your OISEnet/FirstClass mailbox (please consult our FAQ for more information).

For some users, the above setup is a completely acceptable and comfortable way of doing business, and no other changes/modifications are required.  For others, it may be desired to bring some of the information currently held in their FirstClass (OISEnet) account over to the new system. Other users may want to use the current set-up as-is, but save a backup of their old messages to their computer.

I have completed the required steps in the Faculty & Staff email migration process and have gone through my FirstClass mailbox and deleted any extra messages or folders that are no longer required.

Here are the options now available:

Copy A Few Messages

  • I am a light user of email, or I have only a few old messages that I need to access.  I am comfortable using FirstClass to access old messages, but would like a few of those messages from the new e-mail system.
  • Recommended users:  Recommended for most users.

Copy Contacts

  • I want to copy all or some of my personal Contacts from FirstClass for use in Outlook or Entourage.
  • Recommended users:  Any user.

Move Messages

  • I want to move old messages from my FirstClass mailbox (Inbox) and save them to my computer so I can access them in Outlook or Entourage.
  • Recommended users:  Any user.

Move Folders

  • I want to move old messages from my sub-folders in FirstClass and save them to my computer so I can access them in Outlook or Entourage.
  • Recommended users:  Any user who has completed the above "Move Messages" step.

Save Messages

  • I want to save a local text file copy of all or some of my old messages from my FirstClass mailbox.
  • Recommended users:  Any users who wish to have locally-saved text copy.

A note about Sent Items: Unfortunately due to technical limitations,
it is not possible for any options to move/copy or allow you to access any of your
Sent Items from FirstClass in the new Exchange environment.
Sent Items will remain available to you by logging in to FirstClass.

What happens to FirstClass after August 2010?

First Class OISEnet will no longer be available as an active eCommunication service after August 1, 2010. An archive of the data (conferences, inbox, files) will remain available to users for reference only for a period of one year. You will only be able to access the First Class content to save as a local file to your computer; no email communication, forwarding or new file upload will be available. This access will be available as for reference purposes only until First Class is fully decommissioned next year.

How can I get my @oise address associated with my new UTORexchange account?

The Dean's Office recommends that OISE users associate their @oise email address with their UTORexchange account.  This will give you the ability to send and receive emails as your @oise address.  If you have completed the Migratin Steps without the assistance of the Education Commons Client Care Portal, please contact the CCP to create the alias.
