Title: Career Studies (Grade 10)

Career Studies ESL/ELD C/D, 16 students
Objectives and Purpose: This lesson is designed for students who are searching for their future career paths. Throughout this lesson, they will follow through the steps of the Web Quest and take a multiple intelligence test. The results will hopefully guide them to research suitable careers that correspond with their highest intelligence.
I have created a Web Quest that is geared towards students of all language backgrounds who have recently arrived from countries where access to education may have been very limited and who have not had opportunities to develop age-appropriate literacy skills in their first language.

Mental Set: I asked students to leave the computers and approach me, since I found it hard to speak when students were looking at their computers. I gave the students a handout containing sentences that described eight abilities. I told them that they have to go around the classroom and find students who are able to do those abilities (i.e.: Find someone who is…good at Math, is good at memorizing names, places and dates, etc.) Each of these abilities corresponded to a type of Intelligence (Verbal/Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Visual/Spatial, Naturalistic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Bodily/Kinesthetic). After this activity, I linked the lesson on Multiple Intelligence and the Web Quest. It also related to students’ background as they recalled past experiences when they have not understood a concept because they were not using their highest intelligence. The mental set is a good energizer. It also allows the students to interact with one another and get them thinking about these intelligences.

On the handout provided, there were also a few questions related to the site. I asked the students to pay attention as we read the instruction on the Web Quest together. I asked for volunteers to read each paragraph. This way, they would be involved and practicing their oral/reading skills. I had designed the site with ESL/ELD students in mind. I tried to use simple language, highlighting important words, using big fonts, adding colour and images, and providing links to dictionaries.

Modeling: I showed the students how to navigate the Web Quest and when they went to the Multiple Intelligence Test, I demonstrated how to answer the questions and how to find out their highest intelligences.

Practice: As the students were working on the Web Quest and answering the questions, they were using several thinking strategies such as understanding, summarizing, categorizing and evaluating. Some of the questions on the handouts included: Write your top 3 intelligences and write 2 descriptions for each one; what careers are suited for your intelligences?; and do you agree with the results?

Check for understanding: I made sure I went around to check if the students were doing okay or not. If I found there were common mistakes, I would stop the class and redirect them to the appropriate area.

Closure: I asked students to read the “Conclusion” page on the Web Quest, which summarized the lesson. As well, I asked each student to write his or her names down on a sticky note and place it on the bar graph created on the blackboard, which contained the 8 intelligences. In the end, they would get a sense of how many of their classmates share the same intelligence and what the class’ highest overall intelligence is.

Assessment: I wasn’t planning on marking this handout but I was assessing them throughout the activity and whether not they were able to follow the curriculum expectations. I also collected the handout to get a sense of their comprehension skills, as well as their grammar and spelling.
