Universities
do NOT have unitary minds!
Listen
to the range of opinion at OISE/UT on multiple intelligences.
Margaret
Wente’s
column in the Globe and Mail on Feb. 17, 2004 recognized OISE/UT
as the "gold standard for Faculties of Education," but
attributed
a "progressive orthodoxy" to our teacher education program
that ignores
all the debate that goes on here. Wente quoted one of our teacher
education students as saying, "You're not allowed to say that,
unfortunately, not every kid is as bright as the next one," and
went on
to describe the theory of multiple intellgiences as being the progressive
orthodoxy that holds "every kid is smart in his or her own way..."
This
month's experts are Ken Leithwood, Carol Rolheiser and Carl Bereiter,

Carl
Bereiter, PhD
"The main educational thrust of multiple intelligences is
to encourage teachers and curriculum designers to pay more attention
to mental abilities other than the verbal-symbolic ones. That is probably
wise counsel unless carried too far; too far means treating all 7
or 8 intelligences as deserving of equal time. To do so is to ignore
how the real-world works in the present age."
Carl
Bereiter is co-director of the Education Commons at OISE/University
of Toronto, a division that integrates all information and technology
services with research and instructional program development.
