Thank you to all those who took the time to update the constitution and for those who were able to make the AGM in order for us to have a new and improved constitution!

New Update on GSA constitution with the proposed changes
At the November meeting of Council, we struck a Constitution Committee to review
and propose changes to our somewhat outdated constitution. The members of that
committee were:
Jeff Myers - chair (current President)
Daniel Vandervoort (past Secretary and current council rep)
Shaun Chen (current Treasurer)
Erin Sperling (past VP and current council rep)
The proposed constitution before you today is the product of much discussion and
debate. In accordance with the old and new constitutions, we submit it to you today
NOT FOR APPROVAL but rather as a notice of motion for the next meeting, which
is our AGM. This is the Committee’s official report; while you may discuss it today,
substantive debate, amendments, additional proposals should wait until the AGM.
It is a long document so let me direct you to what I think are the three main areas of
change:
•Executive – we changed the titles of executive members and some of their
roles and responsibilities. See Article III, Section 3 (pp. 2-3).
•Council membership – we changed the council membership to better reflect
current practice and reality. Specifically, we have reduced DSA reps to 2 per
department, made CUPE3907 a non-voting seat (as we are with them), and
added a non-voting alumni association seat. See Article IV, Section 2 (pp. 4-
5).
•“formally constituted groups” – we added language around what kinds of
groups can be considered for voting rights at Council (i.e. MT, ICS etc.). See
Article IV, Section 5 (p. 6)
There are a variety of other small changes and I strongly encourage ALL members
of council to read through the proposed new constitution so they can make an
informed decision at our AGM.
Sincerely,
Jeff Myers
President & Constitution Committee Chair
