Changing Roles of the University
November 1-3, 2012
Glen was invited to speak at a World Universities Network conference entitled "The Changing Roles of the University in Social and Economic Development and the Implications for Institutional Governance" at Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China), November 1-3, 2012. The conference was part of the "Ideas and Universities" initiative and it was co-sponsored by the UNESCO Chair in Entrepreneurial Education at Zhejiang University.
Universities and Regional Development

Glen made a presentation at a one-day invited symposium entitled "New perspectives in higher education and regional development: dynamic processes of knowledge infrastructures, innovative businesses and regions" at the Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, on October 30th, 2012. The syposium included a book launch for "Universities and Regional Development: A Critical Analysis of Tensions and Contradictions" edited by Romulo Pinheiro, Paul Benneworth, and Glen A. Jones.
Who Makes Decisions for the University?

Glen was an invited speaker at a panel session on "Who Makes Decisions for the University? A Forum on Governance, Power, and the Future of Academia" sponsored by the University of Toronto Faculty Association. The session was video-taped an will be available on the UTFA website at some point in the future.
Discussing the Discussion Paper

The Higher Education Group hosted a symposium on the Ontario Government's recently released discussion paper on themes for strengthening higher education in Ontario. Study on University Senates
September 10-12, 2012
Glen and Lea Pennock presented the preliminary findings from their study (with Jeff Leclerc and Sharon Li) on academic senates in Canadian universities at the annual meeting of the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers in Belgrade, Serbia, September 10-12, 2012. Economic Survey of Canada
June 13, 2012.
The OECD released their Economic Survey of Canada on June 13. The Higher Education Group sponsored a special symposium that brought together OECD authors and OISE scholars in a discussion of recommendations for strengthening post-secondary education and innovation in Canada. Academic Work

Glen attended the international conference entitled "Changing Conditions and Changing Approaches to Academic Work" organized by INCHER, Kassel University in Berling, Germany. The conference also provided participants with an opportunity to celebrate Ulrich Teichler's 70th birthday.
Changing Academic Profession
May, 2012.
Glen Jones, Bryan Gopaul and Julian Weinrib organized two sessions on the Changing Academic Profession in Canada for the annual meeting of the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education that took place in Waterloo in May. A Strategy for International Education
April 22-27
Glen Jones and Roopa Desai Trilokekar (York University) made a presentation at the Comparative and International Education Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico (April 22-27, 2012). The presentation focused on their study of the contextual factors leading to the Government of Canada's decision to create this nation's first strategy for international education. Paying the Professoriate
March 22, 2012
Summary findings of an international comparison of academic salaries in 28 countries were released on March 22nd. The project, led by Philip Altbach at Boston College, concludes that average faculty salaries in Canada are the highest compared with the public universities in other countries included in this project. Detailed information on the project can be found on the project website. The Canadian component of the student was conducted by Glen Jones and Julian Weinrib, and their paper, entitled "The Organization of Academic Work and Faculty Remuneration at Canadian Universities," will be published in a major volume (Routledge, 2012) entitled Paying the Professoriate, edited by Philip Altbach, Maria Yudkivish, Liz Reisberg, Ivan Pacheco and Gregory Androushchak.

Glen presented a paper at a conference entitled "Policy Formation in Post-secondary Education: Issues and Prospects in Turbulent Times" sponsored by the Faculty of Education at York University on March 15-17 at the Novotel Toronto North York. Glen gave a keynote address at the conference entitled "Academic Governance 3.0: What could it be? How do we get there?" sponsored by the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of British Columbia on March 9-10 at the SFU Harbour Centre Campus in Vancouver. Three new Campuses for Ontario: A Symposium on Options, Challenges and Possibilities

We organized a full-day symposium focusing on the Government of Ontario's committment to build three new campuses in Ontario, the needed for these campuses, and the form that these new campuses might take. Students With Learning Disabilities

We have just released a report written by Lydia Boyko and Elyse K. Chaplin entitled "Students With Learning Disabilities: Access to Higher education in Canada. A Review of the Literature." This is a major review of research on an extremely important topic in higher education. The report should be of particular interest to individuals working in student affairs, government, and higher education research.

Bryan Gopaul presented a paper at the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education's conference on Higher Education, Globalization and Social Justice on November 3 and 4. The paper, written by Bryan, Julian Weinrib, and Glen Jones reports on Canadian faculty perspections of teaching and research from the Changing Academic Profession survey data.

Glen Jones with Julia Eastman (University of Victoria) and Claude Trottier (Laval University) were granted funding for their 2011 - 2014 Standard Research Grant awarded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, $127,400.00.

Glen Jones was a member of a three-person team reviewing governance issues at Concordia University. The University is implementing many of the recommendations that emerged from the review.
