HSSSJE Mentoring Program

The HSSSJE Student Caucus is again organizing Mentorship/Peer support "Pairings" of new and returning students this Fall 2012 as a way of welcoming new students and helping them create a link for an easier transition into the HSSSJE community at OISE/UT.  It is not a huge time commitment but a great way to meet other students and contribute to life in the HSSSJE department.

How to Request a Mentor?

  • As a new student, simply send an e-mail to the the Chair of the Committee, Cindy Sinclair with your name, program of study, ie MA, MEd, EdD, PhD and whether part-time, flex-time or full-time), and anything else you think might be helpful in "pairing" you to a returning student.

Who Should Volunteer to be a Mentor?

  • Any returning student

What is Involved as a Mentor?

  • Pairing with a new student starting the HSSSJE program in Fall 2010 who has requested to be paried with a returning student

  • Sharing information about Fall orientation; departmental courses, activities, program; OISE events and activities

  • Mentors do not have to know all the details about being a student at HSSSJE or about OISE, or grad school, or Toronto, but be willing to help a new student find out where to take their inquiries/questions.  A lot of the information can be found under the Newly Admitted page in the Students section of our website.

  • Being available to answer questions the "paired" student might have by e-mail, phone or in person (your choice), especially at the beginning of the school year and less towards the winter months

  • Becoming a friendly face and a familiar name to a newcomer at HSSSJE

How to Volunteer to be a Mentor?

  • Send an e-mail to:  Cindy Sinclair with your name, program of study(MA, MEd, EdD, PhD), part-time or full-time study, research interests (very briefly), and anything else you think might be helpful in matching you with a new student (e.g., activist connections, other community involvement, if you are parenting while studying)

  • Training is not required but support/guidance is available on an individual basis.
