Uninsured persons are responsible for the cost of medical care, which is extremely expensive. The Ontario Ministry of Health provides a free Ontario Health Service Insurance Plan (OHIP) to its residents. Out of province students, if they are not covered by their own provincial plan, should also register with OHIP as soon as possible. Application forms can be obtained from the International Student Centre, 33 St. George Street or U of T Health Service. Alternatively, you can have an application mailed to you by calling OHIP at 482-1111 and asking for "Central Inquiry". The Toronto OHIP office is located at 2195 Yonge Street at Eglinton. Major changes were made in 1994 -- you are advised to obtain up-to-date information to assure adequate coverage. Note: international students are not covered under OHIP.

In addition to OHIP, the U of T Graduate Student Union provides a medical insurance plan to all the graduate students who have registered with the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies. The plan includes an 80% reimbursement of prescription drugs, among other benefits. You may choose to enroll your dependants for an extra fee, or you may opt out of this plan. Contact the OISE Graduate Student Association (GSA) office if you need claim forms or more information (Room 8-105, 926-4724).
