Wednesday Afternoon Program
The Wednesday Afternoon Program offers enrichment programs for children following the noon dismissal each Wednesday. It is organized and supported by a program co-ordinator who investigates and coordinates stimulating programs with qualified instructors. Sports programs are always available, and may include skating, skiing, hockey, tennis, sports and games, rock climbing, and improv. Art and drama courses are also popular.

Dear Parents,
The Wednesday Afternoon Program’s spring term begins Wednesday March 28, 2012 and
ends Wednesday June 13, 2012.
The Wednesday Program is committed to providing programming for your children regardless of the weather. If weather conditions make it impossible for your children to attend their regular classes, they will be given a choice of 2-3 other classes. On such days, a school-wide email will go out, notifying parents of cancellations. Also, you may phone Sarah Murray’s cell phone at 647-309-1573 with any questions. All children return to the Jackman ICS playground between 2:45-3:00 pm.
The Seasons Family Centre is back after the enormous success of their Creative Treats Program.
This term they are offering a class called “Making Minis.” Students will construct miniature rooms based on a scene of their choice. This class is available to Grade 2-6 students.
The team from The Children’s Technology Workshop is also back! This time they will offer a course in Computer Game Design. Don’t miss this opportunity to take your own computer game home! This class is available to students in grades 1-3.
Rock Climbing at Rock Oasis is available again to students in grades 2-6. This is a very popular program, so please return registration forms promptly to avoid disappointment!
Sports & Games at St. Alban’s Boys’ & Girls’ Club is also available. Students in grades 3-6 will play a variety of sports. At all times fair play and good sportsmanship will be emphasized!
Handcrafts is back for a second time! Former “Art with Betsy” teacher Betsy Canfield gives students an opportunity to explore the arts of sewing, knitting, embroidery, crochet, quilting, and macramé. This class is available to all students from Grades 1-6.
After a brief hiatus, Drama with Sarah is available again to students in grades 4-6 who wish to put on a play!
All children enrolled in the Wednesday Program eat lunch in their classrooms. After lunch, they play in the playground under the supervision of two Jackman ICS teachers. Children leave the playground between 12:30-1:00 pm for their activities and return for pick-up between 2:40-3:00 pm.
THE WEDNESDAY PROGRAM ends at 3:00 p.m. and parents are expected to pick up their child(ren) at this time.
Wednesday program registration forms must be returned to the school office by friday, December 16th, 2011. please do not put them in sarah murray's mailbox.
Children are placed in programs on a first-come, first-served basis.
Children are placed in the program of their choice unless you are contacted.
IMPORTANT: If your child is unable to attend his/her program on any Wednesday, please notify the teacher or the school office before 11:30. If the school is looking for someone who is not present, the activity will be delayed for the other children.
Wednesday Program Policies
The Wednesday Program is an enrichment program operating from 1:00 – 3:00 pm on Wednesday afternoons, when the school is closed. Qualified instructors offer a variety of activities for children from Grades 1-6. The program operates independently of the After School Program. Please direct all inquiries to: Sarah Murray at 416-469-1573.

Special instructions must be submitted in writing. (See the Special Instruction Form.) For example, we require written permission for a child who is going home alone from the program site or ICS. Also, if your child is to picked up by another parent please let us know. We are responsible for the safety of your children and need to know that unusual arrangements have your approval.

If your child will be absent on Wednesday due to illness or an appointment, please make sure that the school office (Nancy Boudreau: 416-934-4517) is informed. This is especially important if your child is leaving school after having been marked present in class.

Children, particularly younger ones, should be reminded when they are beginning the first day of their activity and which activity they are attending.

(a) Fees are due with application.
(b) Refunds will be issued up to 4 weeks into term.

BEHAVIOUR
(a) At all times children must heed the instructions of the adults responsible for their care and safety, including adult students and other parents.
(b) Children are to behave in a courteous and safe manner when going to and from their activity.
(c) If a behavioural problem arises, the adult involved will speak to the child and parents. The program co-ordinator may also speak to the child’s parents, teacher or School Principal. If the problem persists after two warnings, the child will be asked to leave the program.
(d) Children must inform their supervisor if they are leaving the supervised area for any reason.
(e) Children must stay in the playground while waiting for the program to begin.
Making Minis
Grades 2-6 (Minimum 10 – Maximum 15)

Pick-up: Students will walk to Bathurst Station, take a bus to Davenport, and return to the Jackman ICS playground by 3:00 pm.
Program: Students will construct miniature room boxes based on a scene of their choice. A room box is a display box used for 3-dimensional, miniature scale environments, or scale models. Room boxes may represent all sorts of environments – realistic and imagined. Students will make furniture, food and whatever props they wish to display in their scenes. This program comes highly recommended by the 10 students who saw several finished miniature room boxes at the Family Seasons Centre, while they were enjoying their Creative Treats class.

Drama with Sarah
Grades 4-6 (Minimum 7 – Maximum 12)
Instructor: Jackman ICS Drama Teacher Sarah Murray
Place: Jackman ICS Lunchroom
Pick-up: School Playground from 2:45-3:00 pm.
Program: Sarah and troupe put on a play! The play is written or adapted by Sarah, and is based on suggestions exchanged in the first class. This program focuses on all aspects of performing a play: costumes, props, blocking, lighting, and line-learning and vocal delivery. Come and watch our play at 2:30 on Wednesday, June 13th!

Handcrafts
Grades 1-6 (Minimum 6 - Maximum 10)
Instructor: Betsy Canfield is an artist and displays her work regularly in several Toronto galleries. She specializes in etchings, drawings, and ceramic tiles. She also runs her own summer art camp on Ward’s Island.
Place: Jackman ICS Art Room
Pick-up: School Playground from 2:45-3:00 pm.
Program: Come and learn the arts of sewing, knitting, embroidery, quilting, crocheting, and macramé. Stuffed animals, small quilts, wall hangings and decorated t-shirts, are a few of the fabulous creations Betsy will help you make!

Computer Game Design
Grades 1-3 (Minimum 10 – Maximum 14)
Instructor: Provided by The Children’s Technology Workshop
Place: Jackman ICS Grade 2 classroom
Pick-up: School playground from 2:45-3:00 pm.
Program: Good computer games require a lot of creative storytelling, artwork and imagination. Grade 1 to 3 students will create and develop stories, and then bring characters to life in their own computer games. (We have a no violence policy). They will learn to integrate background art, characters, and add music to create their very own imagined world. This is a wonderful way for children to develop their story-
telling skills and their understanding of logical progression. Students will take home a USB key with their games.

Rockclimbing
Grades 2-6 (Minimum 10 - Maximum 16))
Instructor: Professional climbing instructors provided by the Rock Oasis.

Pick-up: Students and supervisors will walk to Spadina Station take the subway east to Pape, and take
a bus south for about 5 minutes. Students will return to the school playground by 3:00 pm.
Program: The Rock Oasis features 15,000 square feet of fun, colorful climbing walls. Instructors operate
the safety equipment while children climb. Each child will be fitted with a climbing harness. The instructor to climbing ratio is 1:4.

Sports & Games
Grades 3-6 (Minimum 10 - Maximum 16)
Instructor: Daniel Murray has been teaching our Sports & Games program for 4 years. He is a long time
employee of St. Alban’s Boys’ and Girls’ Club.

Program:Multiple sports and games will be played while focusing on recreation and preliminary game skills. Students will play a number of traditional sports including: floor hockey, basketball, and soccer. Students will also play games to develop ball control and ball handling. At all times, sportsmanship will be stressed.
Cost: $350
*Please ensure that students are appropriately dressed for both programs. Rock Climbers will not be allowed to climb with sandals or winter boots. Also, pants and leggings are best. Please send your child with a water bottle.
