General Practicum Information
- First year students are required to complete four teaching blocks. Each block is six weeks in length (Monday-Thursday mornings).
- Practicum placements are designed to provide the teacher candidate with diverse experience in different school communities. Placements take place in Toronto, within a half hour by public transit to Jackman ICS or within walking distance from Jackman ICS.
- First year students must complete:
1. an early years placement (nursery, junior kindergarten, senior kindergarten),
2. a primary placement (grades 1 to 3), and
3. a junior placement (grades 4 to 6).
- If students are interested in the special education stream, they must complete a special education placement in their first year of study. In addition, they must complete the required special education courses.

During each teaching block, a few first year students are able to do their early years or primary placement in the laboratory school at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study.

A research internship opportunity is available.

An optional full-time teaching placement in May is available for first year students.

Catholic students who are interested in teaching in Catholic school settings must complete at least one of their four required teaching blocks in a Catholic school in addition to the required course work.
- Second year students are required to complete a 13 week internship either in the fall session or in the spring session.
- Each internship term, some second year students are able to do their placements in the laboratory school at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study.
- Final decisions regarding practicum placements remain with the Practicum Coordinator at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study.
