Welcome to Elementary Initial Teacher Education and a lifelong journey of learning to teach! Our goal is to prepare teacher candidates to become highly effective and skilled professional teachers who continue to learn and develop expertise through inquiry and reflective practice. Utilizing a strong research base, a focus on the learner, close connections with field partners and a commitment to modeling responsive, innovative teaching practice, the program is designed to assist teacher candidates construct professional knowledge and develop deep understanding of teaching and learning for the diverse needs of our communities.
The current Elementary Program at OISE is large and complex, admitting almost 500 full-time teacher candidates annually. Each teacher candidate becomes a member of an option or professional learning community with a dedicated team of instructors. The instructors in the elementary program are exemplary teachers who bring a wealth of varied and rich experiences and backgrounds to the program. Teacher candidates benefit from the extensive knowledge and teaching skill that they demonstrate. Each option is linked closely to schools, creating effective programming connected to the real world of educational practice. These strong school-university partnerships provide a meaningful bridge between theory and practice and offer further models of excellence in teaching in the field.
