SP2: Garth Webb Secondary School, Halton/Dufferin-Peel, 2013-2014
Cohort Description
Working in partnership with the Halton and Dufferin-Peel school boards, SP2 provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to study and teach in schools in these geographical areas. Candidates will take their foundation courses at *Garth Webb Secondary School each week. Grounded in principles of teacher leadership, SP2 provides a unique opportunity for candidates to investigate and participate in school-based events, co-curricular activities, professional development initiatives, and guidance and career education programs.

Program/Curriculum
Teacher candidates will take at least one of their foundation courses - Teacher Education Seminar, School and Society, Psychological Foundations - at Garth Webb Secondary School each week. Core program topics will include professionalism, school reform, school law, assessment and evaluation, special education and equity. The Curriculum & Instruction, and the Related Studies courses are held at OISE.
Field Based Experiences
Garth Webb Secondary School is a newly-built school in Halton region (opened in September 2012) and is the learning community in which students in this cohort will be immersed. Teacher candidates will have opportunities to spend additional hours during the week at Garth Webb Secondary School observing classes and participating in school-based experiences and initiatives.
Opportunities to visit other schools in the region for special events and professional development are provided.
Who Should Apply to SP2?
In the space provided on the Cohort Selection and Candidate Information form, successful SP2 applicants will give evidence of the following (200 words maximum):
• a desire to be in a setting that promotes and nurtures teacher leadership
• an interest in the opportunity to learn and practice the craft of teaching in the Halton and Dufferin-Peel region
• an interest in developing an understanding of the issues, initiatives and challenges unique to the Halton and Dufferin-Peel area
• a willingness to travel to placements in SP2 partner schools
