SP5: Peel/Dufferin-Peel, 2013 – 2014


Cohort Description

The SP5 cohort operates in collaboration with the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and offers teacher candidates volunteer opportunities, Practicum and some Internship experiences within these boards. The cohort provides teacher candidates with the opportunity to experience, through their observations and placements, the full spectrum of curricular and co-curricular programs in these Boards of Education. In this site based cohort, candidates will take at least one of the foundation courses – Teacher Education Seminar (TES), School and Society, and Psychological Foundations in a school setting located at Clarkson Secondary School - 2524 Bromsgrove Road, Mississauga.    

NOTE: Curriculum & Instruction courses and Related Studies courses are held at OISE.

Program/Curriculum

• Cohort explores critical issues and methodologies that take into account the diverse student population in Peel region

• Provides opportunities for teacher candidates to volunteer in extra-curricular and curricular activities through the Thursday Project at Peel and Dufferin-Peel schools

• Program is enriched by guest speakers including teachers, vice principals, principals, and instructional leaders from various Peel Schools who share their experiences

Practicum/Internship

  • If possible, candidates may have one or both practicum placements in either of the Peel Region Boards of Education
  • Internship opportunities may occur in Peel schools as well as other Board facilities.

Who Should Apply to SP5?

Successful SP5 applicants will give evidence of the following, in the space provided on the Cohort Selection and Candidate Information form (200 words maximum):

  • A desire to gain experiences in a school-based program, including school observation and volunteer work one day a week;
  • An interest in benefiting from taking a portion of their program in Peel Region;
  • A willingness to travel to placements in Peel partner schools.
