SP6: Multilingual and Multicultural Classrooms, 2013-2014
Cohort Description
The SP6 cohort prepares teacher candidates to work in schools serving linguistically and culturally diverse communities. Teacher candidates learn effective instructional practices for supporting students who are learning English at the same time as they are learning the Ontario curriculum. Specifically, candidates will learn strategies for teaching the language of instruction of their teaching subject to ELL (English Language Learner) students who are integrated in the mainstream classrooms. Candidates also acquire strategies for providing an inclusive classroom environment where linguistic and cultural diversity are valued.
Program/Curriculum
Like all SP cohorts, teacher candidates in this cohort take their three foundations courses together: Teacher Education Seminar (TES), Psychological Foundations of Learning & Development, and School & Society. They take Curriculum and Instruction courses with other candidates who have chosen the same teaching subjects (teachables). Teacher candidates are encouraged to select a Related Studies course in accordance with their personal interests.
Practicum
All teacher candidates have two field-based practicum experiences. SP6 teacher candidates complete at least one of their practicum placements in culturally diverse schools . During their practicum, teacher candidates in SP6 schools are expected to work with ELL students and ESL teachers. In addition to the two practicum sessions, teacher candidates will be expected to spend 4 pre-practicum observation days (2 days before each practicum session) at a school.
