Four Pathways to Becoming a Teacher at OISE

What is "initial teacher education"?

The term "initial teacher education" describes a program of professional education taken in order to be eligible to become certified to teach in elementary or secondary school. The programs offered by OISE are specifically structured to meet the requirements of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) (the licensing authority for teachers in Ontario).

The term "initial" highlights the fact that the professional education of teachers is an ongoing process. The professional education acquired in an "initial teacher education program" should be viewed as a starting point and a foundation on which to build.

Seven principles, informed by research on best practices in teacher education, underpin all four programs:

1. Teaching excellence

2. Equity, diversity and social justice

3. Research-informed

4. Cohort-based learning communities

5. School/field/university partnerships

6. Faculty collaboration

7. Coherence

While each program pathway has a unique program design, content, and delivery approach, these shared principles build coherence among the four pathways.  More about the Four Pathways...

Robin DouglasRobin Douglas
Bachelor of Education, 2011-12, Intermediate/Senior
Regional -- Halton/Dufferin Peel Cohort

"You haven't just chosen to study at a school; you've chosen to be part of a special community. The friendships and professional relationships that I was able to develop throughout my time at OISE have had a significant impact on my development as a teacher.

The fact that OISE was located in a cosmopolitan city with vibrant cultural scenes was an important factor in my decision to choose OISE.

I also knew that the University of Toronto had name that would be recognizable should I seek employment outside of the country.

The quality of instruction was exceptional. I was prepared for my interviews after I completed my program and had a good knowledge of government policies and key areas of research in pedagogical studies.  In other words, this program not only prepared my academically with the theoretical aspects of education, but it also helped me professionally."

Jody MacMillanJody McMillan
Technological Education Apprenticeship Program 2011-12, Technological Design

"The Technological Education Apprenticeship program at OISE has allowed me the opportunity to become qualified to teach a subject that I am passionate about. It is a great pleasure to be surrounded by supportive peers and teachers to prepare me with the foundation for a successful teaching career."

Anthony LeungAnthony Leung

"The program offers several practical opportunities in teaching and allows us to acquire insights about teaching through sharing our experiences with other students in the program so that we can grow as individuals and become effective teachers for future generations."

Saba MirSaba Mir

"The theoretical knowledge and practical experiences I gained provided me with the background and confidence I needed to both teach my very own class and to pursue graduate studies."
