The Mack School of Nursing, St. Catharines, ON, 1970 Research Overview • August 2009 – in progress - Principal Investigator for a “Case Study of an Innovative M.Ed. Program with a focus on Leadership in Higher Education”; Dr. Cicely Watson is Co-Investigator. Data collection is by mixed methods: on-line questionnaire survey of Cohorts 1, 2 and 3 completing the program and content analysis of interviews with a sample of these students, faculty and staff. • Nov 1, 2006 to Oct 31, 2009 – founded and chaired the Colleges Ontario Network for Industry Innovation (CONII). At the end of the second year the network of 10 colleges led by Katharine had collectively completed 143 applied research projects in partnerships with 14 colleges and universities, that involved 740 students engaged in research under the direction of 230 faculty. • June 2006 Principal Investigator for a study titled Professional Development Needs and Interests of Faculty in Canadian Colleges and Universities (n=3,500; response rate 12.5% overall; 26% for some groups) • May 2006 – Principal Investigator - Professional Development Needs Assessment of Administrative Staff in Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology in Ontario (n=247) • September 2004 - March 2007 - Seneca Lead for an experimental project entitled “Enhancing Student Success in Post-Secondary Education” - Experimental study of the impact on student success of 4 intervention strategies related to the students’ self-assessed “at risk” factors. • June 1999 - 2003 Principal Investigator - Internet based courses to teach Ontario secondary school teachers how to teach in broad based technology subjects • 2002- 2003 - Seneca College Lead in the Mobile Learning Project Teaching Overview Dr. Janzen has taught in higher education in Ontario for more than 35 years. She was Professor, Coordinator and Chair of the Nursing Program at Seneca College for 18 years; Director of Professional Development for 10 years and Associate vice President Research & Innovation for 8 years, also at Seneca. Between 1990 and 2007 she was a part-time Adjunct Professor at Brock University, as an Associate with the University of Toronto/OISE teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs. Her main areas of interest and expertise are: Curriculum Theory, Design and Development, Teaching/Learning strategies, Organization Development, Education Research, and Leadership and Change in education. She has supervised more than 35 students who have successfully completed their master's research projects and theses; she has served on numerous doctoral theses committees. Katharine has co-facilitated several year-long leadership academies for health professionals and college faculty, administrators and support staff. Representative Publications 1993 - present - Founding and Senior Editor of The College Quarterly - an academic journal that focuses on research and scholarly discussion of issues relevant to Canadian colleges. The journal includes both peer reviewed and editorial board reviewed scholarly papers. Nov 1, 2006 to Oct 31, 2009 – Katharine was the founder and Chair or Colleges Ontario Network for Industry Innovation (CONII) – CONII received a $3.5 million grant from the Ontario Ministry of Research & Innovation to conduct applied research in partnership with college faculty, students and small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s. In 2009, the Ontario Provincial awarded CONII an additional grant of $10 million over the next three years!
