Academic History Ph.D. University of Manitoba, Psychology, 1989 M.A. University of Manitoba, Psychology, 1984 B.A. (Honours), University of Manitoba, Psychology, 1982 Research Overview Dr. Magnusson's work explores the intersections of adult and higher education, neoliberal economic policy, and globalization. Working from a feminist marxist perspective, her recent research documents how the financialized economy has been affecting women in their pursuit of higher education and their ability to negotiate economic, social, and cultural security. ‘Financialization’ refers to the increasing importance of financial markets and financial institutions in the sum total of national and international economic activity. The common themes in the literature connecting financialization to questions of security include precarity, debt, and the political economy of permanent war. Working from her expertise in feminist and higher education studies, professor Magnusson's research contributes to discussions on adult education policy and community interventions in the area of women’s securitization. Other Information Saturday afternoons offer a welcome break from my usual academic work teaching adult education in a university. Jumping onto my motorcycle, I zoom to a non-profit martial arts studio that graciously offers space to hold qigong and self-defense for the lgbt community in Toronto. The program, called Fighting Out, was fashioned after a rich tradition among feminists who are martial arts teachers and who link martial arts practice to the anti-violence movement and community development. As I worked hard over the past twenty years to become a martial artist, I simultaneously attended workshops, visited training spaces, and interviewed many women who connect what they do as martial arts teachers to political activism. Building from this tradition I also teach self-defense to sex trade workers.
