Retirement has offered him the possibility, so writes Dieter Misgeld (mandatory retirement in 2003) to pursue his interest in Latin America more systematically. After several visits to Mexico and Colombia he has also begun to teach in Argentina. In Argentina he taught a month-long seminar last year, together with a young Argentinian philosopher, in the doctoral program in philsosophy at the Universidad Nacional de la Plata, in La Plata, capital of the state of Buenos Aires, one hour away from the national capital. They discussed the Frankfurt School of Social Research and other West European philosophies in relation to South American issues. This year, in April/May they will again offer a seminar, this time on " Violence, Democracy and Human Rights." Their focus will be on left-wing Latin American thinking, its internal critique of armed revolutionary movements, the weaknesses of the traditional human rights paradigm and of its North American interpretation and other related themes (classes in Spanish).
Misgeld will also give a major lecture at an education conference in Gudalajara , Mexico, followed by two seminars. In Leon (Guanajuato), Mexico, he will offer a minicourse on "comunidad, convivencia y sociedad". In Colombia he gave talks last year at 2 universities, on "human rights and social theory, a critical view".
He also participated in the fourth annual meeting of the "Movement of Victims of Crimes by the State", and reported about it to a Canadian human rights organisation.
