Profile: Kerstin Roger, MEd (1992)
Adult Education and Community Development
My Masters thesis examined the role of art in the community to bring about change. My supervisor was Dr. Budd Hall. I was certified as a Clinical Psychotherapist and Supervisor in Ontario and was in private practice for several years in Toronto. In 2004-06, I completed a Post Doctoral Health Science Centre Foundation Fellowship under the supervision of Dr. H.M. Chochinov. In my current research as Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Social Sciences (University of Manitoba), I ask questions about care and care giving. I have worked internationally, with the federal and provincial government, as well as with local community initiatives.
My time at OISE conjures up rich and dynamic memories of engaging in important discussions with students and faculty from around the world. I have not forgotten Dr. Angela Miles engaging conversations with students pushing us to think of new parameters for our community action, Dr. Jack Quarter's kind and thoughtful approach, and numerous other colleagues who in my Masters in Education inspired and invigorated me to think about thinking AND action. Moreover, I was convinced that a PHD was the only likely outcome of this wonderful Masters, which I continued in Sociology and Equity Studies under the supervision of Dr. S. Razack.
My focus in research was, and has continued to be, to ask questions about care and care giving in a range of settings and from a range of perspectives. I gained invaluable skills from these mentors that led me to develop a career as a consultant in the community and for government for many years. These experiences fundamentally shaped my growth as a person, a professional consultant for many years, and now as an academic. I look forward to hearing from other current and previous students and faculty!
