CCL Program Requirements and Curriculum

The CCL Program requires the completion of a minimum of eight courses and two comprehensive exams. A general comprehensive exam is normally scheduled in the winter semester of the first year and the specialized comprehensive exam occurs in late fall of the second year.

The typical sequence of courses and schedule of comprehensive exams is outlined below.

Summer Institute I (3 weeks)
Three half-courses are completed during the intensive, three-week residential summer institute. They are:

TPS 1819H: Governance/Leadership in Higher Education (1 half course)

TPS 1803Y: Recurring Issues in Postsecondary Education (2 half courses)

Fall Year 1
TPS 3820H: Special Topics in Higher Education: Survey of Higher Education Research (1 half course)

Winter Year 1
TPS 1834H: Research Methods in Higher Education (1 half course)

General Comprehensive exam (winter of year 1)

Summer Institute II (2 weeks)
Two courses are completed during the second intensive, two-week residential summer institute. They are:

TPS 3820H: Student Development in Higher Education (1 half course)

TPS 1805H: Community Colleges (1 half course)

Fall Year 2
TPS 3852H: Individual Reading and Research in Higher Education: Doctoral Level (1 half course) or elective from departmental offerings

Specialized Comprehensive exam (late fall of year 2)


Thesis: Under the direction of a faculty supervisor and committee
