Virtual field trips: The role of technology in experiential education
Keywords: Experiential education, technology, field trips
Abstract
This research examines how virtual field trips can be used as an instructional tool and learning resource in education. In a virtual field trip, the computer is used as the vehicle to move students through space and time to explore an otherwise inaccessible world. The study attempts to compare traditional field trips with virtual experiences and answer the question: what are the potential benefits, challenges, and effective uses of virtual field trips in Ontario classrooms at the junior and
intermediate level? Teacher participants for this study were drawn from Ontario public schools based on experience with implementing traditional field trips. A professional in the field of creating virtual experiences was also selected for the insight he could provide on the educational
goals of virtual experiences. Preliminary analysis suggests a key element for the success of a virtual field trip is the degree to which it is interactive and experiential.
