Evelyn Freeman

Lecturer

Evelyn Freedman taught in high schools for many years.  Initially she taught General Science and Biology and then Special Education.  She also held both leadership and consultancy positions in the public school system. Since coming to OISE-UT she has been teaching the course Teacher Education Seminar (TES) in the pre-service B.ED teacher education. This year 2010/2011 she will be teaching in the concurrent and the MT program.  For many years she has also taught and developed several Special Education Additional Qualification courses both face to face and online.   She received several awards from the Council for Exceptional Students including Teacher of the Year for Ontario in 1992, and Educational Leader of the Year for Ontario in 2005.  


Evelyn Freedman’s research for her M.Ed thesis was into the relationship between linguistic and cognitive development.  She then worked with Dr Elizabeth Wiig, a world renowned Speech and Language Pathologist and this was published under the title of the Word Book, by SRA in 1990.  This book awarded the Joan Kershaw Publication Award in 1994. 

 

Evelyn Freedman has presented and done workshops on this topic across Canada, the US and internationally. Currently a second revised edition is being published  by Linda Schreiber and Associates.  This work focuses on the teaching methodology needed to ensure the of development of higher level concepts, concurrently fostering literacy as well as identifying the essential concepts and prior knowledge students need to progress  in high school.
