Master of Teaching, CTL, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto

Program Specializations

The Master of Teaching is a graduate level teacher education program. It is full-time study leading to a Master of Teaching (MT) degree. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers for an Ontario Teacher’s Certificate of Qualifications which certifies them to teach in Ontario schools. MT students get both their teacher qualification certificate and a graduate degree. Students can choose from three program specializations:
  • Primary/junior (Kindergarten to grade 6)
  • Junior/intermediate (grades 4 – 10)
  • Intermediate/senior (grades 7 – 12)

Students are required to complete 16 half courses (10 core, 5 specific, and 1 elective) and 4 practice teaching placements over the two years. This study is done on a full-time basis and normally, advanced standing is not granted in this program Students also complete a research project on a topic related to teachers’ work. (Previous experience with research is NOT a requirement for this program.) Registration in the second year is contingent upon successful completion of all first-year work.

Courses
Drawing on our extensive research, the MT program is built around courses, seminars, special events, and practice teaching placements. All of these experiences will help  prepare students to be effective teachers. Every course interweaves theory and practice, which helps students to gain a deep understanding of the teaching-learning process, while acquiring an extensive repertoire of teaching strategies. Students complete courses in both curriculum (e.g., mathematics, literacy) and foundations (psychology, special education). The MT provides a coherent curriculum which carefully guides students through their development as teachers. As with all teacher education programs in Ontario, many of the MT courses are pre-determined by the Ontario College of Teachers. Most courses are required or mandatory; however, students can select one elective.

Research Project
Over the two years of the program, students complete a research project on a topic related to teachers’ work. Having experience with research is NOT a requirement or an expectation for admission to the program. The research project includes both theory on a topic and its practical application to teaching. Students are carefully guided through the project. This research project is NOT the equivalent of an MA thesis.

The titles of some recently completed projects are:

l      Multicultural education in practice: A case study
l      Fostering literacy success among English language learners in the mainstream classroom
l      Everyone has a story: Teachers' literacy stories as a resource in the language arts classroom
l      Image meets word: Incorporating graphic novels into classroom instruction
l      Incorporating students' out-of-school digital literacies in school

Religious Education
M.T. students interested in teaching in the Roman Catholic Separate School system can take the religious education elective course.
