dean's message

SEPTEMBER 2007

Welcome back to all of you who have been away during the summer, and a very warm welcome to those who are joining the OISE community for the first time this fall. September is full of promise for a new and exciting academic year. I look forward to the various orientations, welcomes and gatherings that will take place throughout OISE in the next few weeks.

We welcome three new department chairs this year. Professor Esther Geva will chair the department of Human Development and Applied Psychology; Professor Reva Joshee will chair the Department of Theory and Policy Studies; Professor Kari Dehli will chair the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies. Many thanks to each of them for taking on new responsibilities.

I have just returned from a productive meeting in Singapore to inaugurate a global Alliance of Leading Educational Institutions. The deans of a key faculty, school or Institute of education in China, Korea, Singapore, England, the USA, Denmark, Australia and Canada came together to discuss mutual concerns, deepen their collaboration and develop a common voice to address issues in education. Our first topic will be teacher education as it is being taken up in jurisdictions around the world.

Congratulations to Ken Leithwood who was voted into the Royal Society of Canada. This is a very high tribute to Ken’s scholarship. Congratulations also to our 2007 Arbor award winners: David Booth, Anne Millar, Joseph Mulongo, Cicely Watson, Gillian Mackay Graham, and Liz Terry.

Sincerely,
