The Scholar in Residence Competition: Funds Visits of more than 6 months

The Scholar in Residence Competition is run by the Visiting Scholars’ Funding Committee, who distributes funds to support the activities of Visiting Scholars who are visiting OISE for more than 6 months.

Who can apply?  When are applications accepted?

Tenure-stream faculty, tenured faculty and lecturers are invited to complete an application form and submit it to the Committee, which meets twice a year:

In May to evaluate applications for visits between May and December (applications are due April 10)

In November to evaluate applications for visits between January and April (applications are due October 10)

Seconded and contract instructors are invited to team up with tenure-stream/tenured faculty and lecturers to complete an application form.

A reminder call for applications will go out to faculty at the end of March and at the end of September of each year.

How much funding can applicants ask for?

Each applicant who submits an application for the Scholar in Residence funding program (6 months or more) can apply for a maximum of $2,500.

Normally two Scholar in Residence applications will be funded each year.

The Scholar in Residence funding that is available through the Visiting Scholars Funding Program should be seen as a contribution to the overall fundraising that may need to take place to fund a Visiting Scholar’s visit to OISE.

Applicants are reminded that Visiting Scholars need to be invited to visit OISE by OISE faculty and that each Department at OISE has its own policies and practices around organizing visits.   Applicants should check with their Departments if they have questions about organizing visits.

What is expected from the Visiting Scholar in exchange for Scholar in Residence funding?

Visiting Scholars who receive Scholar in Residence Funding are expected to engage in at least two activities with OISE faculty, staff and/or students during their visit (for example, a public talk and a set of meetings with faculty and/or students).

Faculty who receive funding from the Visiting Scholars Funding Program must ensure that all public talks are well advertised throughout OISE.

How many applications can applicants submit for each competition?

Each applicant can submit only one application a year.

What happens if I miss the deadline for the May or November competition?

Applicants who missed the May or November competition can still submit an application for the Committee to consider.  The maximum amount that applicants can apply for in between competitions is $500.00.

The application will be assessed by a sub-committee of the VSF Program and will take two weeks to process.

Where do I send my application form?

Applicants should send their completed application form to:

VisitingScholarsFund@utoronto.ca

Who serves on the Visiting Scholar Funding Program Committee?

Faculty representatives from each of OISE’s four Departments and a faculty representative from the Initial Teacher Education unit serve on the Visiting Scholar Funding Program Committee.
