Special Advisor to the Dean on Equity and Accessibility
Professor Rinaldo Walcott
Dr. Rinaldo Walcott is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education. Rinaldo came to OISE in 2002 from York University where he was a professor in the Division of Humanities. While at York he was the Graduate Program Director of Interdisciplinary Studies, a member of the executive of York University Faculty Association, as well as the Director of Affirmative Action for tenure stream appointments. A University of Toronto alumnus, he holds a PhD in Sociology and Equity Studies in Education from OISE. His teaching and research is in the area of black diaspora cultural studies and postcolonial studies with an emphasis on questions of sexuality, gender, nation, citizenship and multiculturalism. From 2002 to 2007, Rinaldo held the Canada Research Chair for Social Justice and Cultural Studies, and in 2010, he was Senior Research Fellow at the Warfield Center for African American Studies and the Department of African Diaspora and African Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Rinaldo is a widely published interdisciplinary black studies scholar and has well over a hundred scholarly publications and presentations. A public intellectual, he is a regular contributor to popular newspapers, magazines, radio and TV.
In his capacity as Special Advisor to the Dean on Equity and Accessibility, Rinaldo will establish and lead an OISE advisory board on equity and accessibility, and will advise the Dean on policies and procedures to ensure equity and accessibility in all areas at OISE.
