"I can change the world": Three grads on how OISE is the key to their success

October 5, 2016

Meet Tamara, Aisha and Shaun.

The three OISE graduates are profiled in the new video series, “With OISE I Can.”

The award-winning elementary school teacher, senior policy analyst and Member of Parliament each credit their success to the knowledge and experience they gained at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto (U of T).

“With OISE, I can inspire learning,” Tamara Mitchell says in the video.

The MEd OISE graduate, who also completed her undergraduate degree at U of T, incorporates music into her daily lessons at Dewson Street Public School in Toronto. She was honoured on World Teachers' Day in 2013 and featured in the Toronto Star.

Aisha Khaja, whose parents immigrated to Canada to give her a better education, graduated with an MA from OISE in Leadership, Higher and Adult Education.

Khaja says her experience at OISE empowered her to make an impact.

“With OISE, I can literally change the world,” says the founder of Charity Week Canada, who also hosts the talk show, Let the Quran Speak, and has worked for the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs. More recently, Khaja became a Senior Policy Analyst in the Ministry of Training and Youth Services.

And Shaun Chen, a Scarborough native who wanted to improve the lives of others, is working to “create a more just society” thanks to his graduate studies in Social Justice Education at OISE.

“With OISE, I can make a difference,” said the MP for Scarborough North.

Chen, named by Maclean’s magazine as “one of 100 young Canadians to watch,” is also the former Chair of the Toronto District School Board. He, too, completed his undergraduate degree at U of T (in Computer Science and Equity Studies).

Meet Tamara, Aisha and Shaun in the videos above to see how OISE has helped them achieve their dreams.
